Chapter 31

Kingdom of Ashes

How the fuck am I supposed to do this? Bloom thought, reemerging within the Alanammus Guardian room.

All the humans in their hulky armor gasped, pointed, and a few of them even grabbed their polearms. The biggest one yelled, “Hold! Hold, dammit! We have orders!” before anyone did something stupid. “Warlord, please accompany me to the archon’s chambers. She is expecting you.”

“Sure thing, Boss. Lead the way.” What a fucking trip this place was after seeing Mylor. Diamonds, chalices, and gluttony was everywhere as they traveled through the halls. Worst of all, the humans in robes kept staring at her. Not a glance, which would be rude enough, but a stare. Such audacity would be a death sentence in Vaynex…but there was no Vaynex anymore. Partly because these humans sat here and did nothing. She met eyes with one of them from across the hall. That was his cue to look away, but he just kept fucking staring. “What is it? See something you like?”

Bloom’s escort chuckled as the humans ran away. “Don’t take it the wrong way. Most of them have never seen a zephum in person, let alone a warlord.”

“Is it true that Sardonyx came here once? I can’t imagine him walking through this dump without leaving a trail of bodies.”

“Yes! He was escorted by my old captain, Julius Cavare. I wasn’t there to see it but, apparently, some child grabbed his tail in the middle of the courtyard.”

“My condolences to that one. Child or not, touching the tail is probably the quickest way to get cut in half.”

This human must have had an odd sense of humor, because something about that statement made him laugh out loud. “Warlords always make it interesting. How was Serenna at the summit? I enjoy your company, but part of me wished she would come back.”

“Well, she’s not. You’re stuck with me so you may as well get used to it. Maybe if you cowards had bothered to aid Mylor or Vaynex, you could ask her yourself.”

Her escort stopped laughing, looked down and took a deep breath. “That’s fair. If it means anything, it wasn’t the gold cloaks’ decision to stay idle. We wanted to battle alongside—”

“Doesn’t mean a thing to me, so shove it. I don’t understand this place. You hold the armor. You hold the blades. You hold all the fucking power. The only reason you stood by and did nothing is because some coward with a crown gave you an excuse not to.”

“It's not that simple…”

“Sorry, Boss, it is and it always has been. Are we almost there? You’re starting to piss me off, and I don’t want to walk into this meeting more angry than I need to be.”

He answered by pointing to a large door. Out of all the unnecessary luxuries, the diamonds pounded into the structure were the most obnoxious. How did they even get them in there? “I hope you can forgive me for being a disappointment.”

“Well, I hope you can forgive me for what you’ll be doing tomorrow.
